A section of leaders in western Kenya urged residents to resist attempts by some to divide them along party lines to achieve their selfish aims.

They said some leaders had deliberate plans to use regional parties to divide them and weaken their bargaining power with the nationally-minded United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Among the leaders were MPs John Waluke (Sirisia), Benjamin Washiali (Mumias East) and Didmus Barasa (Kimili).

Others were LSK President Nelson Havi, former Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and former Kakamega senator Bonny Khalwale.

"We want to make it clear that the creation of the new Kenya Democratic Action Party, associated with Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa, is part of a detailed plan to divide our people and weaken our support for the nationally minded UDA," Barasa said.

For his part, Vice President William Ruto gave a slap to leaders who like to divide the nation by forming a party he calls the tribal party.
“We must resist his plan to divide the country into tribal cocoons. Ethnic formations serve only the narrow and selfish interests of individual leaders. Hustler Nation believes in a diverse and progressive policy focused on the economic growth of all Kenyans and equal access to opportunity for all,” said William Ruto.
