Mwingi Accident: At least 20 people were killed and 10 were rescued when a bus crashed into the river in Mwingi county of Kitui County.

The school bus taking passengers to a wedding plunged into Mwingi's Enziu River as the driver tried to cross a flooded section of road.

It is not yet clear how many people are on the bus, which is expected to have a seating capacity of more than fifty passengers.

The rushed people were taken to the Mwingi Level Four Hospital for emergency treatment. Mwingi East county police commander, Joseph Yakan, said search and rescue efforts are ongoing, although agencies are trying to determine the number of people booked on the bus before it departs for Mwingi North.

It was reported that the accident occurred around 11:00 am in Ngune Village in Mwingi Central. The travelers were choir members of the Mwingi Catholic Church and were traveling from Mwingi Town to the Nuu region. As the bus slowly sank, passengers on the bus were seen screaming and raising their hands from the windows. According to Kitui County Police Commander Leah Kithei, the 51-seat bus is owned by Mwingi Junior Seminary, a private school run by the Catholic Church.
