Traders at Gikomba Market in Nairobi are counting their losses after a fire broke out again that destroyed an undervalued property.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It was seen that the traders were struggling to save some of their goods in the muddy market after the heavy downpour that continued throughout the night.

Almost three months have passed since the same market caught fire.

After the August fire, the government promised to install CCTV cameras around the market as a safety precaution so that no one could get lost in the frequent fires.

Chief Interior Secretary Karanja Kibicho gave the instruction while touring the market on 6 August 2021 and also gave the contractor responsible for the installations 7 days to complete the work.

"We will improve the lighting, we have directed the area team to map the 10 lighting points and we will add CCTV cameras to these lights," said PS Kibicho.

Kibicho also noted that access to the market in emergencies is a major challenge.
